An isolated spire located at the 5700 ft. level just below the Sandy Glacier. Separated by two deep tributary chasms, the pinnacle is a major summit climb deep within the heart of the Mt. Hood wilderness.
Approach by way of the Lolo Pass road (F.S. 18). Take F.S. 1828 and follow a winding road uphill to a graveled side road leading to the Top Spur trailhead. Hike the Top Spur trail, and then follow the Bald Mountain (Round the Mountain) trail south into the vast Sandy River basin. Take the southernmost drainage of the Muddy North Fork Sandy River. Follow the stream upward until the foreboding canyon walls steepen. Angle leftward up the steep hillside to the southwest base of the Blade.
To descend from the summit, rappel via an easy tree-to-tree descent on the south face of the crag (can be done with a single 50-meter rope).
