Rooster Rock is a popular tooth shaped basalt pinnacle on the south side of the Columbia River Gorge located immediately west of the boat launch area at Rooster Rock State Park. Drive east from Portland, Oregon on I-84 and take exit #25. Pay the reasonable daily parking fee and park your vehicle at the State Park. Walk around the south side of the small boat moorage lagoon along a graded trail (between the freeway and the lagoon) to gain access to the rock pinnacle.
The following is a brief description of the ONE great climb on this pinnacle always worth an ascent. So if you are a typical Gorge rock cruiser then this is certainly a 'must do' climb to have on your list!
This fascinating rock climb is enjoyable and straight forward on reasonable rock. From the freeway walk north through a cluster of berry briers and cottonwood trees, then up a steep dirt path till it branches at the base of the pinnacle. Take the left branch of the trail up to a small level dirt stance next to a large fir on the SW shoulder of the pinnacle. Ascend 4th-5th class rocky steps about 70' to a stance at a bolt anchor below a slight overhang. Traverse easterly 20' to the base of the obvious diagonal ascending corner system. Ascend this steep crack system (crux) for 70' till it angles over onto the spine of the southeast ridge. Scramble up the highly exposed ridge for 30' to the summit.
Rappel with two ropes down the south face back to the starting point at the base of the large tree.
